There's been some pretty bad reporting out there on the safety concerns which have been raised about Amtrak and Brightline. Most of it can be summed up in a single word: horrible.

Here's an editorial about Amtrak safety which is worth reading. It's not filled with glaring inaccuracies or a "abandon all else and put my region first" point of view. What's more, it's intelligently written.

Included in the potential line sales are the former Seaboard and L&N lines across the Panhandle (former route of Amtrak's Sunset Limited) and the route of both the Silver Meteor and Silver Star north of West Palm Beach. CSX lines in the Carolinas used by Amtrak would also be impacted.

It's an age-old problem. Trespasser deaths on railroad tracks. And it's disappointing that Brightline is being singled out for criticism.

According to the FRA, an average of 458 people die trespassing along railroad tracks each year.

What's needed is a larger public awareness campaign which will gain the public's attention so that these incidents will stop across the nation, not just in Florida.

As Operation Lifesafer has been saying for years, it's important for the public to understand that anytime is train time!

Faced with an electorate which has repeatedly voted down transit plans which include light rail, politicians turn to buses instead.
