Amtrak will never be able to expand its route system or frequency level of service without an order for more rolling stock. Its Amfleet equipment and Superliner I cars are starting to show their age, and if not replaced soon, we will be looking at more route and frequency cuts. the problems involving with discontinuation of the Hoosier State and Amtrak's failure to reinstate Sunset Limited service east of New Orleans to Florida are precursosrs of what is about to come. the Viewliner II order was nothing more than a piecemeal minimum order to retire the last of its aging heritage cars. A few dozen cars are not enough. More like, we need a few thousand cars! Amtrak is only a couple more train wrecks away from cutting more service.
