This was tried once before, during David Gunn's tenure I believe. The commuter railroads screamed because they would have to pay their fully allocated costs of using the Northeast Corridor which they do not now do, and the private sector showed little interest. Amtrak needs to be the operator of and a user of the Northeast Corridor, but not the owner of it. The infrastructure costs are eating them alive. Turning it over to the Department of Transporation might be one option.

If the Libertarian party advocates privatization of government services, how come they have not put their money where their mouth is? They even tried to privatize the Everglades Parkway while Jeb was governor, and got no bidders! Even after the minimum bid was lowered twice, and both bids were still too low to purchase it. Meanwhile the toll rates have gone up again!
