Is High Speed Rail Hurting the Cause of Passenger Rail?

Author and conservative Bill Lind has an intriguing argument.

Are the large costs of high speed rail giving ammunition to those who oppose all forms of improved passenger rail and transit?

I definitely believe that all the hoopla about HSR has had in the past two years, and will have in many years to come, a detrimental effect on any passenger rail. This is why I voted against HSR both times it was on the Florida ballot. HSR and AMtrak style passenger rail are two different animals and the twain may connect, but they don't mix. As a result of this HSR mess, I fear the Sunset Ltd. will not return to Florida in my lifetime, and I now wonder what else we will lose. We probably not get service on the FEC for years longer than it would otherwise have taken.
