CNN chose a bad source to rely on for it's criticism of passenger rail. It's no surprise that the likes of the CATO Institute, Reason Foundation, and other libertarian-minded think tanks have a habit of twisting and turning the numbers to satisfy the interests of their critics of anything in government. Their criticisms are so shallow they never seem to address an alternative idea to fix the problems except to just say "no".
If they are among the groups that oppose government spending, why are they advocating building more new highways, lane widening, and toll roads when they can't even pay for themselves? What's the point in building more roads when the existing highway budget won't even pay to keep the current roads in a good state of repair? The real boondoggle is the spending on new highway construction while overlooking the rest of the overall transportation picture. And who likes paying tolls, making it more expensive to travel and drive?
