    I think it is quite likely that this WILL SPELL THE END OF PASSENGER RAIL for at least the next 50 years. Private operators may try, but then each route would have to be seperately negotiated, and if this results in any abandonments, it will be virtually impossible to reinstate them. Then, what level of fares will be required and will sleepers be available - at what cost?. I fear the cost of a bare essentials ticket may be beyond most of us.

      I don't think the sky is falling, Jerry. First of all, you're assuming a Romney victory, by no means certain. Secondly, you're assuming that all items in the platform will actually become law, highly doubtful. Platforms, in general, and this Republican platform, in particular, are usually full of "red meat for the base" items which, very often, never come to be enacted into law.

    Just tell Romney and the GOP, I ride Amtrak, use public transit, have a bicycle, and I vote. End of conversation over who I am NOT going to vote for.
