The last Amtrak national timetable that showed any new route addition, by rail, was the April 29,2002 timtable. The Kentucky Cardinal was extended across the Ohio River from Jeffersonville, IN to Louisville, KY. No new routes by rail have appeared since then, only cutbacks. This does not include any changes affecting Thruway bus service.

Yes, and that service didn't last very long, either.  Needless to say, we have lost routes rather than gained them, but I think the next decade may hold some promise if the political winds are favorable.

I won't be surprised and I'm fully expecting Virginia to break this period of infamy when they restore Amtrak service over the former Mountaineer route between Petersburg and Norfolk later this year. Plus, it's being done with decent bipartisan support, like it should be!Virginia is one state I've been on Amtrak quite a bit. They're doing a good job up there. I love riding Amtrak through Virginia, and I still have an old poster that says so "Virginia is for lovers".

New Amtrak route in Virginia starts November 12, 2012. That will restore the former "Mountaineer" route between Petersburg and Norfolk, by extending one NEC train south of Richmond. It will end the decade of infamy for no new routes, unless the state of Maine gets its service on the Downeaster corridor extended north of Portland to Brunswick ealier.
